For most of us, knowing God’s will is so very important.  His will is a reflection of His purpose for our existence.  As we study the Scriptures we can find that there is a general divine will for all of humanity (abundant life), and we also find more specific callings and giftings as well as precise direction in some cases.  Is there a general ‘rule of thumb’ for knowing God’s will when we don’t have specific direction?

But you, O man of God . . . pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness.  (1 Tim. 6:11)

Did you know that you can be led by righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience and gentleness?  Righteousness speaks of your new identity in Christ, free from guilt and condemnation.  Follow after things that speak of righteousness and avoid things that stimulate guilt.

Godliness is another direction finder.  Stay with activities and pursuits that are pure.  Sow to the Spirit in your daily activities and you will starve the flesh (carnal desires).

Follow those things that inspire your faith.  Faith comes from hearing God (Rom. 10:17), and if your faith is alive to some endeavor it is probably because you have heard God though you might not even know when it happened.  Conception is silent.

Let love lead you.  God is love and His love is the power behind redemption.  Let His love in you be a redeeming force toward others.  As you love others, more light will shine on your own life and your path will be clear.

Rest in His patience.  Patience is a powerful weapon against foolish decisions.  Stay true to the Word and know that by faith and patience we inherit the promises (Heb. 6:12).

Choose gentleness.  Let your peace overwhelm the fear of others.  You can choose to be kind, gentle and humble regardless of the circumstances.

You really don’t need three dreams and a vision to know God’s will.  If you will stay in harmony with righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience and gentleness, you will be in the center of His will and you will be a blessing to many.
